All about ‘Clothes, Music, Boys’

It could be you’ve already read this book – it was published in 2014, so I’ve taken time discovering it. It was lent to me by my daughter after she in turn was lent it by her friend.

It sat on the table while I finished another book but I was itching to start it. I love strong female role models, love music and it kept catching my eye. I finally picked it up this week and haven’t put it down since.

It’s so GOOD, so startlingly honest. I’ll be lost when it’s finished and that’s going to be soon as I’m practically inhaling it.

Viv Albertine played guitar for The Slits, a 70’s  girl punk group. She did what she did when I was still too young to go to gigs and festivals. That would come later.

I remember the Slits though, just like I remember the Sex Pistols and The Clash and they were still going strong by the time I was old enough to appreciate them.

‘Typical Girls’ keeps going through my head. Their version of ‘Heard it through the grapevine’ was really fresh, with Ari Up’s ululating vocals. It’s been a YouTube companion to the book.

I’ve also been playing more favourite girl singers from the late 70’s early 80’s. A lot still going strong today.

Remember the AuPairs? or The Passions?

If you love the punk/post punk energy and salute a strong female voice, read this book…unless you already have. Why has it taken me so long to find it?

Off on my hols next week.

Enjoy your weekend xxx

I’ve been on the look out for that book for ages – hopefully it’ll turn up in a charity shop eventually! Have you read Patti Smith’s Just Kids? Highly recommended. If you don’t love her already you will after reading it.
The Beeb was threatening a spell of high pressure for the weekend, I’ll keep everything crossed that you have wonderful weather. xxx

I hadn’t heard of this book, so I haven’t read it, but now I want to! As I was a punk at the time The Slits were around, it is actually imperative that I should read Viv’s memoirs! Thanks for the tip, I’ll be looking out for it. And of course, I am wishing you a lovely holiday in Wales, and will keep my fingers crossed for wonderful weather. xxx
