Upcycling

There is much pleasure to be had in taking something past its best and turning it into something you love. Upcycling not only reduces waste but it gives me such a sense of satisfaction. It’s not even the money that’s saved that is the main motivation,  although it is nice it’s true!

The dresser top below started life as a shelf unit with rot and it came from the back of someone’s garage:

This is how it looked when it was finished and below is the shelf unit I started with and the first stage of turning it into a dresser:

As you can see it was no beauty!

First I rubbed it down, then created a top from skirting board. Next it was filled with wood filler where necessary and then undercoated.

By now it was starting to look like the finished article, it just took some paint, I used tester pots for this. I often opt for tester pots as it’s cheap for small areas. Then to finish it was waxed and buffed.

I have reached the point where I would prefer to see if I can find something old to remake before I consider buying something new. I love that you end up with things no one else has and that the thing you made started out as broken, unloved or even rubbish!

I think that since I started Upcycling my attitude to consumerism has changed, advertising affects me less and I prefer to see things that are original and one off. It’s also a really great way to save money without feeling like you’re depriving yourself.

I don’t know who invented the word Upcycling and it has become a bit clichéd but it is nonetheless excellent and I thank them for making me look at junk differently.

Three cheers for up up Upcycling!
